Ah yes. Final Fantasy 2 and 8. The unloved kings of their respective sub-series (2D Final Fantasy games and Single-Player 3D Final Fantasy games respectively). The ones that everyone seems to hate.
Why do people hate them? The main reasons people bring up are the systems are too different. Too WILDLY INVENTIVE. Too, dare I say it, GOOD.
